Abe Gurvin
Abe Gurvin (Attleboro, Massachusetts, 31 dicembre 1937 - Santa Maria, [Santa Barbara County], California, 9 luglio 2012) è stato uno dei più prolifici ed interessanti artisti americani, tra i maggiori rappresentanti della 'psychedelic art' (che, nata a San Francisco, era un'evoluzione dell'arte 'groovy', e che traeva ispirazione dall'uso sistematico dell'LSD). Le notizie sulla sua formazione scolastica e professionale sono totalmente assenti dai websites, mentre assai noti, amati e premiati sono i suoi lavori: ha disegnato copertine di album per artisti come Janis Joplin, The Zodiac, Federal Duck e Bread, ma la storica serie di copertine per i dischi Nuggets per Elektra, rappresenta un autentico capolavoro che ha sancito, e in un qualche modo chiuso, un'era artistica straordinaria
Il portfolio di Abe Gurvin includeva lavori pubblicitari per aziende come Toyota, Coca-Cola, Disney, Suzuki, IBM, Marantz, Scholastic, Kenwood, Time-Life Books, Sony Music e molti altri. Ha ricevuto premi da One Show, Communication Arts, New York Art Directors, Best of Show, LA Society of Illustrators, New York Society of Illustrators, Los Angeles Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers e The Belding Award.
Ricordiamo alcuni lavori grafici di Abe Gurvin come l’indimenticabile copertina di Car & Driver del maggio 1968, dove un disegno psichedelico era stato trasferito sul cofano di una Porches; la collezione di disegni per la cucina Casserole Cookbook, per la serie fantascientifica Sci-Tech e le numerose illustrazioni realizzate a mano per un progetto editoriale di fiabe (rimasto inedito ancora oggi) chiamato I Am Being Me di Ann di Hope.
Abe Gurvin ha fatto parte del consiglio di amministrazione della SILA (Società degli illustratori di Los Angeles); nel 1988 Gurvin si è trasferì in una villa a Laguna Beach in California e, successivamente, a Santa Maria dove morì all'età di 74 anni.
